Coverage on Derby News Network

FMDG's Inaugural Bout!

"Get your tickets early we have sold out and had to turn people away but never 300 people."
Bob Getz - Fargo Civic Center, Director

"...and holy moly, did that crowd ever love roller derby. These Great Plain-sers were new to the sport but they had pompoms and signs to wave. They hollered and clapped. When there was a grand slam you could hardly hear us announce it due to the noise in the stands." Cracked Pepper, roller derby announcer for North Star Roller Girls, Minneapolis, MN

The FM Derby Girls would like to extend an enormous THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for the unexpected and overwhelming support from our friends, family, and fans of the F-M area.

We sold out the Civic Center at nearly 1,700 seats and had to turn over 300 people away that were still in line for tickets!

The game started with an overwhelming response from the crowd when the FM girls took the floor coming out to AC/DC's Shook Me All Night Long and holding signs for our Canadian competition that read "Knockin' Em Out With Our American Thighs" based on a popular line from the song.

During the first period the Winnipeg Roller Derby League was close behind the FM Derby Girls closing the first half with FM 35 Winnipeg 27. Early in the second half the Winnipeg girls came out of half-time with a new defense strategy that led them to pull ahead in the score for the first time during the game. Halfway into the second period, Winnipeg's jammer was sent to the penalty box multiple times. An amazing 15 point jam by Messi Jigler and a 13 point jam by Shock Therapy brought the FM Girls into a solid lead. Winnipeg put up a great fight but in the end were unable to recover from those few jams their jammers spent in the box and the final score was FMDG 101-Winnipeg 55.

FMDG's top scoring Jammer for the game was Messi Jigler scoring the team 29 of the 101 points!

We want to hear from you: our friends, family, and fans about what you thought of the game. We're looking for quotes to use in our next marketing materials and media kits! Please send us your feedback and thoughts to:

FMDG Scrimmage with Sioux Falls Roller Dollz and Winnipeg Roller Derby League Saturday August 15th at Skateland

Rollergirls and ref staff from Sioux Falls Roller Dollz and the Winnipeg Roller Derby League traveled to Fargo Saturday August 15th to scrimmage and train with the FM Derby Girls. The event was an invitation-only event for our sponsors, media, friends and family to experience first hand an exclusive sneak peak of how hard we've been training and what to expect from our first bout. The scrimmage gave our skaters and staff extensive on-hands training and the insight needed to start competing in games and also on a national level.

Thank you to the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz and the Winnipeg Roller Derby League for traveling and taking the time out of your busy schedules to travel to North Dakota to train and scrimmage with the FM Derby Girls! FMDG would also like to thank Dr. Vein of Wellness Solutions Chiropractic for keeping us "in line".

FMDG Fundraiser Recap

The FM Derby Girls would also like to give out a huge shout of thanks to everyone that helped make our first fundraiser Sat. evening August 15th at the Aquarium a huge success! Thanks to everyone that brought a canned food donation, Cousin Bee, Pat Lipsiea, Giant Killer, and Josh Driscoll, Skateland, Quality Bakery, the Side Street Bar, PBR, The Aquarium, and the Winnipeg Roller Derby League for drinking us under the table like good Canadians should!

The FM Derby Girls are proud to present "Support Local Roller Derby" featuring the Bluegrass/Irish Punk Rock sounds of the North River Ramblers, battle of the bands 2nd place winner, Cousin B, the acoustic rock one-man-band known as Pat Lipsiea and the Pat Lipsiea Explosion and introducing the metal sounds of Giant Killer. In between sets, kick back and watch local girls perform burlesque skits. Salon Why? will also be doing hair and makeup for the FM Derby Girls the day of the show while local photographers will be taking photos of the derby girls, bands, and the crowd. Proceeds go towards helping the FM Derby Girls pay for league insurance and practice space.

Come on down to the event Saturday night, August 15th at 8pm. It's $7/cover at the door and $5 if you bring a canned good. All canned goods are going to our favorite FM charity- The Dorothy Day Food Pantry helping individuals and families in the FM area that are in need. The FM Derby Girls have individually donated over 30 hours of volunteer time to date at the Dorothy Day Food Pantry.

The FM Derby Girls are training hard 3 nights a week to bring competitive roller derby to the cities of Fargo/Moorhead and the state of North Dakota. None of us get paid to do this! In fact, we all contribute our own time, talents, and money to bring this exciting new sport into our community. We rely on the support of our family, friends, fans and sponsors to make that happen!
